It’s all relative

A bit of history.. It has been a year, and Anika’s closet doors have not been fixed. Daddy has been ultra lazy as usual, and now the doors barely move; in fact, they are close to toppling over.

After a long hard day, Ms. Pandey was lying in her bed and was very chatty, as usual. This time, the topic of discourse was “Why is there night?”, of course, alluding to the fact that night-time should never arrive and Anika should never go to bed. For some unforseen reason, Rachna tried to explain the phenomenon scientifically to the puny 3 year old.

Rachna: “There is the Sun and there is the planet Earth. The sun stays still while the earth moves. When the earth moves and Anika faces the sun, it is day. When the earth moves further, and Anika faces away from the sun, it is night.”

Anika: “But Mama, the sun *does* move! I have seen it move and go down.”

And so on, till the point that Mama gives up: “OK Anika, for you, everything moves. The sun moves, the earth moves, the moon moves – everything moves.”

Anika: “But there is one thing that never moves. That closet door never moves Mama.”
